Why Being UNcool Is the New Cool
By Ava Grace
To quote Leanna Crawford's song 'Uncool' will be the start of this post. She sings:
If its uncool to say that I love Jesus
If its uncool to sing about my freedom
Then I'm cool being uncool
If its uncool to tell the world Who saved me
I don't care if they call me crazy
'Cause I'm cool being uncool
In this song, Leanna explains the importance of going against the crowd; not blending in with all the popular kids. Because in reality, being cool and popular has no eternal reward. But having Jesus - and sharing our faith - does.
When we deny our true faith-driven selves and start blending in with the crowd, we are going to feel hollow and empty. Because being the most popular kid at school is not going to get us anywhere. Sure, we might be looked up to, but for the wrong reasons.
As Christians, we want to be looked up for a different sort of popularity, though these days, being a Christian is not all that popular with the cultural world.
And that is ok.
When Jesus was alive, He was not the most popular dude around. Only after He was killed and raised from the dead did the Christain faith began to spread on rapid fire. It began to spread so much that it became uncool (and highly illegal) to even hold the title of Christain. Hundreds of godly men and women were murdered because of their faith. Martin Luther was exiled from his home after he translated the Bible into English so the common person could read it, because of his faith in God and trust in Jesus.
So not being the most popular kid in that classroom isn't gonna do much damage. Sure, you might not have as many friends. But are all those kids who flock to you really your friends? Or are they just trying to look good and get a little higher on the standard by being with you?
Proverbs says there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother; I have experienced this, and I still do! It is so much better to be in a tight circle of peers that you can count and rely on - and know you can be counted on and relied on yourself - than in the middle of a large mass that just wants something from you and is not willing to give anything to you.
And that is why we must remember why it is cool (in a good way!!) to be uncool.
Highly agree, Ava.
